Year 7.
It is our aim to
promote the School Mission Statement which is “Every pupil has the
right to learn and every teacher has the right to teach”, put into
practice school policies, advance the School Improvement Plan and enable
pupils within our care to move to the next stage of their education as
fully prepared as possible.
Our year group is made up of 6 classes, each averaging
24 pupils. The form tutors, who will continue through into Year 8 with the
pupils are an important part of a dedicated team. Within the year group we
have the Head of Art, Head of PE, Head of Science and Head of ICT and an
Assistant Headteacher along with Mrs Laycock the Year Team Leader who deals with any
pastoral issues and leads the team.
Year 7 is the first year of secondary education for our
pupils, leaving behind the primary syllabus and beginning to lay the
foundations of work which will enable them to be successful with their GCSE
examinations.
Last term one of our pupils and her form tutor were
lucky enough to meet Her Majesty the Queen when Sheza
Rani won the 7-11 age group
in the Doodle 4 Google national art competition. Sheza’s
design won the East of England round where the public were able to cast
their votes on line at the Google website to select their favourite in Great
Britain. Sheza,
Mum and her tutor went to the London Headquarters of Google to meet the
Queen and collect her prizes.

Another success for the artists in Year 7
was the prize of a morning’stuition with a famous caricaturist
Picasso Griffiths. After demonstrating his skills drawing caricatures of
the art teacher and a certain Assistant Headmaster he engaged the pupils in
a cartoon frenzy.

Following the visit of Lt. Angela Laycock
RE, who, last year enthralled the year group with her expedition
to climb the world’s 5th highest mountain Makalu, the year 7 pupils are now
following her experiences via e-blueys whilst she
is serving in Iraq
with the peace keeping force. Year 7s mission was to design and make a
Christmas card to be sent to the troops who would be celebrating Christmas
out in the desert.

The Art Department
are also exhibiting Year 7 tonal newspaper collages on this website in an
interactive art gallery so staff, students and parents can vote for their
favourite.
Many of the pupils were involved in the traditional school
pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, which was performed over three evenings
just before Christmas. Some played characters from nursery rhymes and fairy
stories, others were in training backstage
controlling lighting whilst many equally important jobs, like car parking
attendants and seating, were Year 7 pupils willing to give their time to
help. A fantastic time was had by all and we were thrilled to perform to a
complete full house on the last night.

The lighting crew.

In January a group of pupils took part in the Inter
School Cross Country Championships. It was a cold overcast day with lots of
mud and puddles to run through!!! Two Year 7 pupils, Justinder
Lail and Abdul Mohammedi
came in 4th and 5th and now go on to the County
Championships. Watch this space
for more results.

Another of the tradition events in the Year 7 calendar
is the annual trip at the end of term to Wicksteed Park
near Kettering. I am told that
the pirate ship is not for the faint hearted but the dodgems are really
good fun when the pupils can demonstrate their driving skills!!!!!???? or not in many cases.
Whilst working hard in Year 7 we also aim to have lots
of fun and enjoyable events for our pupils to take part in. Towards the end
of the school year form tutors invite selected pupils to apply for the
position of Year 8 prefect. This is a formal process where the pupils apply
in writing and are then invited to an interview with teachers and their
Year Team Leader. The new prefects are then invited to apply for the Head
Boy and Head Girl positions so we are ready for when we begin our final
year at Robert Bruce
Middle School with our team
ready in place.
