YEAR 6.

It is our aim to promote the School Mission Statement which is “Every pupil has the right to learn and every teacher has the right to teach”, put into practice school policies, advance the School Improvement Plan and enable pupils within our care to move to the next stage of their education as fully prepared as possible.

This year our six Year 6 classes average 26 pupils per class with a caring, experienced and dedicated team of form tutors led by an Assistant Headteacher and the Year 6 Team Leader,  Mr Batho. We are fortunate to have the Heads of English, Mathematics, PSHE  and Geography in our team of form tutors. The Team Leader oversees the day-to-day running of the Year group and works in collaboration with the form tutors on pastoral issues. The team benefits from staff with a wide range of expertise and experience. Within this variety is a hard-working team, committed to achieving the best for the pupils and one which works well together. As well as having a valued role within the year group, each member contributes to the teaching in other year groups.  Having all our classrooms on our own Year 6 corridor along with the lockers creates a friendly, stable atmosphere for our pupils.

This year is an interesting and challenging year for our pupils as they have the opportunity to partake in many varied activities. These range from sporting activities, musical opportunities to the school’s annual Christmas pantomime. Two representatives from each form are elected to serve on the Year Council who meet to discuss matters of concern and to work jointly with pupils from other year groups to achieve their ambitions.

The main focus for the pupil’s in Year 6 are the SATS Tests that they will sit during a week in May. Our aim is to enable all pupils to perform to the best of their ability. Great care is taken to ensure that

all pupils are fully prepared for the tests.  Meetings are arranged to help parents understand the importance and contents of the tests and how to help the pupils deal with any anxieties they may experience. Our EAL coordinator provides support for our EAL pupils. The pupils work very hard towards these tests each hoping to gain level 4 or 5 and the results are shown on their final annual report which is sent home each July.

Last year, in the summer term, the Year 6 staff and pupils enjoyed a visit to the National Space Centre in Leicester. This was a very enjoyable visit with lots of  hands on experiences and a chance to ride in the spaceship simulator. The venue for this years visit has yet to be decided so watch this space.
