Robert Bruce aims to make the transition
from Lower to Middle School as smooth and stress free as possible for the
children. To do this our Year 5 Pastoral Manager, Mrs. Gingell, along with
our Head teacher, Mr. Short visit the Lower Schools to meet the children
and invite them to Robert Bruce both for a morning visit and also for the
whole day later in the term.
Year 5 at Robert Bruce is an exciting
place to be. We have lots of activities and clubs to join as well as
working really hard. We aim to slowly integrate children into the main
school, which with 700 pupils can be overwhelming after the comforts of
lower school. To help with this, Year 5 is situated in a separate annexe,
and has its own library, ICT rooms and toilets. We believe this helps to
make the children feel more confident as soon as they arrive at Robert
Bruce.
Practical lessons are carried out in the
main school building so children gain the full advantage of Robert
Bruce’s Art, Design, Music and P.E. resources.
In Design, children in Year 5 make a key
ring out of acrylic. This is a fascinating project and is extremely useful
as each child has the opportunity of having his or her own locker. The key
may then be safely kept on the key ring!
Year 5 children also join their own
library, and are able to borrow fictional books, non-fiction and reference
books – used during lessons and for homework. Every child is given a
library card – again this can be kept on the key ring. All this gives
the child a sense of responsibility.
There are lots of clubs – some
take place during the lunch hour and some after school. These include:
Homework Club, Chorus, Art Club, Handbells and a variety of sports clubs.
There is also a trip to Hazard Alley, a
purpose built centre in Milton Keynes that
aims to educate children about hazards in the modern world. The children
are taken on tours, and given a hands-on guide to such dangers as railways
and water, and taught about antisocial behaviour and first aid.
As a treat before Christmas, the children
are given the opportunity to see a pantomime. In previous years, we have
either visited a local theatre or had a travelling theatre come to the
school to perform exclusively for Years 5 and 6. They also make
christingles and walk to a local church for a Christmas celebration.
At the end of term and to finalise a
successful first year at Robert Bruce we visit Whipsnade Zoo. The children
are given the opportunity to observe different animals and see various
displays and enjoy the activities.
