The aim of the PE Department is to provide a balanced curriculum of team and individual activities which allows each student to gain understanding of his or her own physical ability and to provide experiences which help to promote character. By the end of Year 8, it is envisaged that over the four years at Robert Bruce each student will have had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities with the intention of discovering areas of enjoyment which can be continued beyond directed lessons. We teach a wide variety of sporting activities and organise for expert coaches to regularly work with the children to develop further skills and understanding. We are currently extending our curriculum to include more diverse international sporting interests.

After school and lunch-time clubs are available to all students and are promoted as a resource available to everyone interested in furthering their physical development.

The school has a proud tradition of success in competition and we make full use of the schools’ facilities. As well the Gymnasium and separate hall space, we have two full size football pitches, a full size rugby pitch, hockey pitch, two netball courts an outdoor basketball court and seven outdoor tennis courts

Departmental Successes:
Over the last few years, the Robert Bruce PE department has been very successful, both locally and even nationally! We were recognized as Bedford Borough Council’s sporting school of the year 2003. Our greatest success has been in Cross-Country, where we won the U13 English Schools Athletics Association National Cross-Country Cup in 2003. In 2005 Hollie McGurk won the U13 girls London Mini-Marathon and in 2006, Jack Goodwin won the U13 boys race.

In the 2005/06 academic year, our teams achieved the following successes:

Yr 8 boys Football team won District 6-a-side tournament

Yr 7 boys Football team were runners-up at District 6-a-side tournament

Yr 5/6 girls Football team were runners-up at District tournament and qualified for the county finals

Yr 8 Rugby team won the Biddenham 7’s tournament

The Curriculum:
The curriculum covers five of the six areas required by the National Curriculum:

Gymnastics
Athletics
Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
Dance
Games (Football, Hockey, Netball or Rugby, Basketball,
Tennis, Cricket and Rounder's).

Unfortunately, currently, we are unable to offer Swimming on the curriculum for our KS 2 pupils.

Each year group is allocated two hours of Physical Education per week. Each hour is then allocated an activity block that lasts for 6 hrs (6x1hr lessons) and may cross over a half term. Each block is planned to fulfil the National Curriculum requirements for that activity.
