MATHEMATICS

The Mathematics department at Robert Bruce Middle School strives to bring Mathematics into the real world that most of our students experience in their lives.  We see it as a vital foundation for their continuing studies as well as their possible future careers.  Our aim is that every child will have the possibility to reach their full potential through ever improving lesson delivery and content.

Within Robert Bruce we are very lucky to have a dedicated and specialised Mathematics department who deliver the curriculum as effectively as possible to students of all abilities.  As well as continuing to build on previous SATs results we are also looking at new ways to further improve the progression through to the end of Key Stage 3.  The new Numeracy Strategies are now embedded into the curriculum and we are starting to introduce new ways to assess pupil’s progress.

Children are set by ability so that the teaching can be tailored to their individual needs and abilities.  Students of all years now have the opportunity to join Booster classes and are able to use a number of varied and interesting resources in their lessons including ICT.  The resources include a varied range of different textbooks which can be used within a lesson to supplement the curriculum when required.

For 2009/10 we are introducing trips into the Mathematics department, which we are hoping to increase in frequency and in numbers in the future.  Initially we are taking a group of Gifted and Talented students on a trip to Bletchley Park, where we will be breaking codes and solving puzzles.

At Robert Bruce we view mathematics as an exciting field of endless possibilities. It is an essential life skill, enabling people to manage a budget, shop and cook. It is also a vital foundation for so many careers, from banking and retail to engineering and health. We want to enable every child to reach their full potential in maths.

We are fortunate to have a dedicated and highly specialised Maths department who deliver the curriculum as effectively as possible to pupils of all abilities. We are striving to build on our success in recent improved SATs results and are embracing the new national numeracy strategies in years 5, 6 and 7 with the introduction of a new scheme of work tailored to the new national numeracy strategy.  We use a variety of practical resources as well as IT to build on previous knowledge and increase understanding.
