HISTORY
All children at Robert
Bruce study History. Learning about
the past and the methods used to study it help pupils make sense of the
world in which we live.
History allows pupils to
ask questions, to collect and record information, to organise
their ideas, and to present their results using a wide range of
techniques. By reading original
sources, studying photographs, visiting historical sites, handling artefacts, and watching re-enactments by visiting
speakers, pupils are provided with a variety of invaluable experiences.
History is about real
people and real events. Through
learning about other people and events, pupils have a better understanding
of themselves and society.
Throughout the year,
Year 5 pupils study the history of the local environment, Tudor explorers,
the ancient Aztecs and the lives of Victorian children – again
relating this to the local area.
Year 6 pupils complete a
large study on Britain
since the 1930s, focussing on the social aspects
rather than the war itself. They
also study the ancient civilisation of Greece and
identify how this has influenced us today.
Year 7 and 8 pupils have
begun a new curriculum in line with the new Key Stage 3 curriculum. Year 7 pupils study Medieval Britain
starting with events that happened in 1066 and ending with The War of the
Roses. They also complete a study on
Empires throughout history and again, link these to Britain
today.
Year 8 pupils complete a
study of the Tudor period, focussing on the
social and religious events of the period.
They complete a bridging project that links to their Upper School
and, from this year, will also complete a study in American History,
looking at the Civil Rights movement and the effect this had not only on
America but on the world.
A programme
is currently under review to run a History Masterclass
that would be offered to local middle and upper schools. It is hoped this will take place in the
Spring Term.
. The History Department has a programme of events planned to enhance and enrich the
learning of the pupils.
Year 5 pupils will visit Cadbuty World in Bourneville to enhance their learning
about the Aztecs. Following an
educational talk by CadburyWorld staff, including
the opportunity to dress up as Aztecs, pupils will tour the site and look
at the links between the Aztecs and chocolate.
Year 6 will be travelling to Coventry to visit
Coventry Cathedral as part of a joint visit with the Geography and RE
Departments. They will be taught how the cathedral was destroyed in the
blitz.
It is hoped that Year 8 pupils will
be able to enhance their learning of the Tudors and Stuarts with a visit to
a Tudor house.
