FRENCH
At Robert Bruce we aim
for the children to become aware that they are citizens of the European
Community. We believe that by equipping children with linguistic skills,
including both spoken and written, and by learning about French culture,
they will come to develop a cultural awareness of the wider European Community.
The aim of the
Department is to provide an exciting range of activities, which cultivate a
‘fun’ approach to learning a new language and includes
opportunities to utilise the language for real purposes in everyday
situations, such as shopping and ordering food in a restaurant. Our teaching includes a variety of
activities which appeal to a range of learning styles. These include
role-play, dialogues, mime, pair work, videos, group work, surveys, ICT,
games and songs.
We also
aim to cover the more formal side of the language, the application of
grammatical structures, which forms the base of language learning. This year we are embracing the New
Key Stage 3 Curriculum which involves opportunities for cross-curricular
links in other areas of the curriculum. This includes links with ICT in an
exciting project which commenced last year with our link school in Brittany. Children
will be communicating for real purposes and discovering a comparative
community as our French
School is based near
the coast and is in a village. The children really benefit and enjoy
receiving news from their personalised
French contacts. This is initially remaining with our Year 8 pupils.
Children’s
can further experience French culture by an opportunity to enjoy a French
Breakfast to celebrate European Languages Day in September each year which
has been a great success.
Learning
centres around kinaesthetic approach
to their lessons, learning for real purposes with creative role- play
enabling children to apply the language they have learned.
There
is also a very successful visit to Normandy
held annually for Year 7 children. This has proved to be an invaluable
opportunity for the children to experience French culture at first hand and
to practice their French in real situations with French people.
An
Italian Club for Key Stage 2 pupils is being launched beginning with Year 5
children and a Spanish Club is already running for children in Year 8.
