ENGLISH
English at Robert Bruce Middle School
is a central element in the development of language skills across the whole
curriculum, enabling pupils to communicate effectively. We aim to develop
each child’s power of expression in speaking, listening, reading and
writing; giving them the skills they need to be able to access all areas of
the school curriculum.
English is taught
through a range of activities, designed to suit a variety of learning
styles. Within each Key Stage, pupils develop language skills through
drama, text study and analysis, word investigations, media and a range of
writing genres. The Revised English Curriculum enables pupils to make links
with all subjects to ensure continuity.
A wide variety of
resources is used to meet the needs of pupils at all levels and enable
every child to achieve success. In both Key Stages, pupils study a range of
texts including fiction, non-fiction and poetry which are revisited
throughout the school to extend their knowledge and understanding.
Within Year 5, extracts
from novels are studied to develop narrative skills; by Year 6, pupils
study at least one full novel, currently Stormbreaker by Anthony
Horowitz. In Year 7, a study of Skellig by David Almond allows pupils to interpret a
novel at a variety of levels depending on their ability. By Year 8, pupils
are introduced to Dickens and Shakespeare.
Close links with Lower
and Upper Schools ensure a smooth transition at the end of Year 4 and 8.
Our newly refurbished
library offers a varied range of reading materials in a comfortable and
stimulating environment..
