DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
. Design and
Technology draws together and integrates the separate skills previously
taught as Craft, Design and Technology and Home Economics. It also supports
and reinforces knowledge and skills from other subjects such as English,
Science, Maths, ICT and Art, thus making it somewhat unique and playing an
important part in the curriculum. There are many opportunities to make
cross-curricular links and pupils can see how school subjects are relevant
and fit together rather than being separate areas of learning.
The study of
Design and Technology encourages an awareness of the designed world we live
in and an understanding that all aspects of life are influenced by Design
and Technology.
At Robert
Bruce we believe pupils should engage in activities that are challenging,
relevant and motivating. Pupils are encouraged to think independently, to
make their own decisions which they can discuss, justify and evaluate. We
believe this approach, as well as taking into consideration the different
learning and thinking styles of girls and boys, will give pupils enjoyment,
satisfaction and a sense of purpose. The department has also used single
sex lessons to some degree of success.
In practice,
all pupils experience handling a variety of materials including Food,
Textiles and Resistant Materials (wood and plastics). Pupils, where possible,
use and experience CAD/CAM, 3D Modelling using computers, and Electronics.
Pupils are given the opportunity to work individually and as part of a team
in well resourced technology rooms. In all years, pupils learn the
importance of the design process and acquire the appropriate skills to
produce high quality and imaginative products within a safe working
environment. Pupils enjoy Design and Technology at Robert Bruce
